Science fiction writer
Seanan McGuire will read from Rosemary and Rue: An October Daye Novel. October "Toby" Daye, a changeling who is half human and half fae, has been an outsider from birth. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the Faerie world, retreating to a "normal" life. Translated into thirty languages, awarded a whole range of awards and boasting record-breaking sales, Nesbř has been lavishly praised by international critics for broadening the scope of the contemporary crime novel, and is today regarded as one of Europe's most important crime writers.

Author Event: Sy Montgomery
Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 pm

Author Sy Montgomery, bestselling author of The Good, Good Pig returns to the Belmont Library to read from her latest book, Birdology: Lessons Learned from a Pack of Hens, a Peck of Pigeons, Cantankerous Crows, Fierce Falcons, Hip Hop Parrots, Baby Hummingbirds, and One Murderously Big Cassowary. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs writes, "Sy Montgomery may be the best interpreter of animals of all time. With impeccable science and profound respect, Birdology describes the miracle of these apparently familiar beings. We take them for granted and that is our mistake. In fact, they are dinosaurs, still living on earth after two hundred and thirty five million years, with minds and abilities that often far surpass our own. One seldom finds a real page-turner as a source of important information, yet Birdology is all of that and more."

THE PIANO TEACHER by Janice Lee
This cinematic tale of two love affairs in mid-century Hong Kong shows colonial pretensions tainted by wartime truths. Will Truesdale, a rootless, handsome Briton, arrives in the colony in 1941, and is swept up by Trudy Liang, the blithe and glamorous daughter of a Shanghai millionaire and a Portuguese beauty. They quickly become inseparable, their days spent in a whirl of parties and champagne, but when the Japanese invade, Will is interned and Trudy resorts to increasingly Faustian methods to survive. After the war, Claire Pendleton, the native wife of a British civil servant, arrives. She begins giving piano lessons to the daughter of a rich Chinese couple, and falls in love with their wounded and inscrutable driver: Will. Lee unfolds each story, and flits between them, with the brisk grace and discretion of the society she describes. It's a world in which horrors are adumbrated but seldom told.
